Keeping Your CrossFit Box Clean

OK, let's talk dirty. Raise your hand if you have done Inch Worms across a CrossFit gym and noticed a suspicious hair on the floor or a half-eaten toe nail clipping. It kind of takes you out of the moment of feeling like an awesome athlete and into a "that's disgusting, get me the heck off of this floor" moment. Hygiene and cleanliness can be one of the biggest complaints CrossFit gyms receive if they don't properly care for their space. With the garage door wide open, wind blows in all kind of debris and we bleed, sweat, and shed all kind of body matter. It is very important to have a system in place with the coaches and the members to ensure that your gym is a safe place to WOD in. If a box is not properly cleaned, members can be susceptible to ring worm, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, warts, a number of viruses and it's grose to admit but the list goes on. I have instituted the following plan of action at my box and it has managed to keep my members safe and healthy despite the amount of blood, sweat and tears that are produced on a daily basis.
One way we all keep our gym clean is the use of FitWipes. They are an awesome product that is bleach free and alcohol free while still containing strong disinfecting chemicals. These wipes are for equipment and floor use only. The chemicals are designed to kill bacteria and viruses so do not use them on your skin! They keep my gym a clean and safe place to WOD in. Due to the dedication level of my athletes, they tend to sweat hard and even bleed on occasion. If they create a puddle while working out, they have been instructed to wipe it up with a FitWipe for the sanitation of the next class. More importantly, if they bleed for any reason it is imperative that they sanitize the equipment that they are working with AND tell the coach of that class. That coach is then responsible for rechecking the area or equipment to ensure that the members did a sufficient job of sanitizing it. The gym is also mopped twice daily with anti-bacterial disinfectant and the bars/equipment are cleaned by a team of professionals once a week. My standard for cleanliness is important to me and my community of athletes so this understanding of high standards on both ends keeps my gym squeaky clean. It may seem a bit overzealous but you know what they say, "better safe than sorry". (Or, "better safe than a ring worm on your back.)
